For the Duelist, I had the idea that it could be fun for a swordsman to challenge another for ownership of the sword. Much like a pink slip for a car. So to have him carrying the trophies like a peacock jumped out at me. I also thought it would be great for him to size up an opponent and handicap them by choosing a specific sword to counter the right technique. We didn't get to cover this in the show, but it was behind the character. When I designed him. I wanted him to stand out amongst the people of the town so he's more official, almost military. I based him on the idea of a hybrid Lee Van Clef meets Vincent Price as a muppet. I figured he's more of a indigenous species of third earth.
Say, I've got a question for you. did you ever come up with any backstories for the other blades the Duelist is carrying--or any unique properties that they might have? It's a shame we didn't get to see the rest of them in his fight with Lion-O.
The only thing that confused me about him is that in the episode he actually didn't use the Drifter's sword against Lion-O. I thought if it was his strongest sword he'd use it. But if he choses the sword based on the opponent that does make a little more sense that he used something else.
Honestly, that was a confusion because of the model sheet. By the time the prop was done, it had already gotten to far. Animation is a bullet train and we make alot of decisions on the fly. We have about 3 weeks to make an entire episode. At least our side of the effort.
